1. What is hinduism?
Hinduism is one of the worlds oldest religions, and is the 3rd largest today. It started with the Aryans, who believed in 1,000's of Gods who controlled the Earth. The Brahmin recited the Aryans poetry and hymns, until It was later written on Sanskrit. The religion changed over the centuries, and some of the religious ideas were borrowed from people aryans conquered in India.
2. What did the Hindu's believe?
Hindus grew out of religious customs of any people over thousands of years, which is probably why there are thousands of Gods. Hindus think of all the gods as a part of one universal spirit called Brahman. The search for the universal spirit is called upanishads. The hindus also believe everything has a soul and a spirit that wants to be reunited with the Brahman when it dies.
3. What is karma and dharma?
Hindus believe that a soul is not joined with the Brahman after a person dies. Instead, the person must pass through many lifesto be united with Brahman. If a person is good, when they die their soul will be reborn into a higher caste or Jati. If the person lived a bad life, when they die they will be demoted into a lower caste, thus living a worse life. This idea is called reincarnation. Living a good life=good karma.
4. Why was Buddhism developed?
By 600 BCE, many people began too question the Hindu ideas. Brahman priests stopped caring about the needs of people and only cared about their temples and ceremonies. Hindus wanted a simpler, more spiritual religion. This would become Buddhism, created by Siddartha Gautama.
5. Who is the Buddha?
The Buddha was a prince named Siddhartha Gautama who left his riches and wealth to try to find an end to suffering. He left his kingdom in the Himalaya's and began to seek an answer, but when he couldn't find it, he began meditating. Siddhartha meditated for 49 days until he finally understood. Siddhartha spent the rest of his life telling people what he had discovered, and his teachings about life and suffering turned into Buddhism.

Siddhartha did not think that the everyday world was real, and that they were just illusions. He believed that the only way to find the truth about the world was to give up all desires, then they could reach Nirvana. The main focus of Buddhas teachings were the 4 noble truths and the 8 fold paths.

Buddha preached his teachings for over 4o years, and when he died his disciples spread his message all over Asia. As more people joined the religion, disagreements sprouted over Buddhas ideas. The bhuddist split into 2 groups: the theravada's and the mahayans.

They believe that the Eight fold path is to hard to follow so instead they worship. This religion group is mainly located in China, Korea, and Japan. The theocracy leader is named "Dalai Lama."
